Plexus (2003)
An Interactive Music and Light Installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego – March 2003
Plexus was an installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego in reaction at the possibility of US attack on Iraq in March 2003, shortly before US invaded Iraq. – March 2003. Attendees voted on choosing war or not; the sonic environment of the space would change based on a running average of the votes. Lightings also changed in their form of illumination of the text on the wall based on the outcome of the votes. A separate similarly lit space was provided for the audience to add their own commentary.
Peace is a collective effort much like making music. No human is an island. It takes many to achieve peace, but if there is no collective consciousness, it takes only one to start a war. Plexus is a sound environment in which the audience is encouraged to participate in its creation. A sonic background comprising of sounds moving in space, seemingly purposeful in their assertion to transform the space but calmly resisting the climactic form, will be the backdrop for what the audience and the environment add to the ongoing aural mixture. A voting booth will collect votes for war or peace and gradually change the sounds and their processing based on the continual outcome.
Premiered at Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, March 2003.
